Dispatches from the Dustball

Dave Maass posts live from the Dustball 2000 Rally. July 27 - 29, 2011.

Three sponsors’ stickers down, one to go. You can just make out the camera I’ll be using on the Dustball. This netbook will be in my lap for three days. I’ve been offered a laptop pad to protect my “boys.”

I hit my funding target last week, thanks to almost 50 different benefactors, including laptop sponsors Owl and Bear, Convoy Auto Repair, Prjct Design/Omatic Snowboards and Boxfire Press, whose sticker should be here soon.
If you’re a camera nerd: I went with the Canon Powershot G12, and I made the right choice. This is the first fully-manual fixed-lens camera that I feel I’ve been able to control quickly and effectively, and not just the ASA/ISO/F-stops, but features like focus tracking, neutral density filter and continuous shooting. The contraptions’s even got a “nostalgia” mode, where you can use the dial to age the picture. Thanks to George’s Camera for the deal on the package.
